“So how was it?” Ben asked, when they waltzed in at 5:30pm. “Did you have a good time?” The kids bounded in screaming and shouting and prancing around.
“Oh it was so much fun,” said Matthew.
“We saw lions and tigers and elephants,” Joss added.
“And Keira got covered in ice cream,” Matthew began.
“And Uncle Orli screamed when he held the spider.”<br>“The monkey stole Joss’ hat…”
“But Orli got it back,” Joss assured his parents.
“And we all got soaked by the dolphins,” they both giggled at the memory.
Ben was joined by his wife and they stood glancing from one son to the next as they finished each other’s sentences. Orlando had taken Keira’s hand, whilst the boys were narrating the day’s events, and pulled her into the lounge. There the two of them had collapsed in complete exhaustion on the couch, eyes closed and heads resting against one another. When the kids had run out of things to say they looked around for Keira and Orli, padding into the lounge to find them. Ben and Hannah followed, laughing when they saw the pair of them slumped on the settee.
“Been a long day has it?” Hannah asked, chuckling.
“Can we go tomorrow? Oh please can we go again tomorrow?” Matthew said excitedly.
“Or the seaside?” Joss added.
“Or the farm?”<br>“Or the park?” they were off again.
“Or the theme park?”<br>
Ben and Hannah laughed. “How about we let Uncle Orli and Keira recover first,” Ben suggested. “They’re not as young and energetic as they used to be.” He winked at Orlando who had no energy left to protest.
“Okay,” Hannah said, moving the conversation along. “Matthew run upstairs and take a bath, you too Joss. Dinner is in 30 minutes,” she added.
When the two boys had run off Orlando spoke; “man you totally have my respect,” he said. “One day and I’m dead but you guys had been doing this for ten years.” He shuddered and Ben laughed.
“You’ll make a great Dad,” Keira said, poking him playfully in the shoulder.
“Not anytime soon I hope,” he replied, grinning at her before he closed his eyes again.
Keira stayed for dinner, offering Orlando the support he needed to get through the days narration, yet again. After the kids had gone to bed she stayed to chat with Ben and Hannah, feeling quite at home with her neighbours now. It was late when Orlando walked her home.
He slumped himself on her couch. “Hot chocolate?” Keira called from the kitchen.
“Please,” he replied, barely awake. She padded into the room, handing him his drink and sitting on the couch next to him, twisting in her seat so she could rest her back against the chair arm and her legs across Orlando’s lap. She closed her eyes and let out a contented sigh.
“I don’t think I’ve had that much fun in ages,” she commented, opening her eyes to look at Orlando. He grinned at her, taking a sip of his chocolate and resting his arms on her knees.
“Yeah,” he replied yawning. “I’m knackered.” They sat in comfortable silence, sipping their drinks and placing the mugs on the floor when they were empty. Orlando yawned again, making Keira giggle.
“I should probably be getting back,” he sighed, having absolutely no will to move from his seat for at least a week. He leaned sideways, his back sliding down the back of the chair until he was lying parallel, next to Keira. He rested his head on her warm stomach and yawned again.
“Night night,” he said, twisting his head to grin at her but Keira was already asleep. He watched her for a few minutes, trying to decide whether to get up and leave her or stay put. Exhaustion got the better of him though and he rested his head back on her stomach and closed his eyes, her steady breathing lulling him to sleep…<br>
Keira was already awake when the phone rang. She had been surprised to find Orlando asleep beside her but not particularly bothered. He looked so cute when he was sleeping and she sat watching him, playing with his soft brown curls for a good 10 minutes before it rang. Orlando woke with a start, jumping up and sending Keira flying off the couch.
“Hey!” Keira cried from the floor. He was beside her in a flash, apologizing and hugging her and kissing her hair. “Don’t fuss, I’m okay,” she said quite amused by his behaviour. “You want to go answer that for me?” she said, pushing him away from her.
He gave her one more good hard look to make sure she was okay before replying, “sure,” and bounding off to answer it. Keira straightened out the couch and picked up the empty mugs, carrying them into the kitchen. She felt arms slip around her waist and turned around to see big brown Orlando eyes grinning at her.
“Jeez, you’re like a little attention seeking puppy this morning,” she said, pushing him away. He pouted. “Who was it?” she asked.
“Ah,” Orlando chuckled. “It was Hannah, checking to make sure I was here and hadn’t run off somewhere.” He paused, “I think we’re going to get some funny looks from them,” he grinned.
Keira rolled her eyes, “great,” she said but was interrupted by the splashing of water. Orlando had his hand under the sink tap and was flicking cold water at her.
“Cut it out will you?” She said hitting him with the dishcloth. The phone rang again, “oh thank goodness,” she sighed as Orlando bounded off to answer it. “He’s worse than a ten year old,” she muttered to herself as she turned off the tap he had left running.
“Who this time?” Keira asked when he came and sat down next to her on the couch. “Hannah again?”<br>
“Nope,” he replied, “Jerry.” He really unsubtly stretched his arms behind his head bringing one arm to rest behind her. Keira rolled her eyes and punched him in the stomach making him whimper and recoil his arm.
She grinned at him before asking, “Bruckheimer?” She couldn’t think of any other Jerrys she knew.
“Yeah, he has scripts for us apparently,” Orlando chuckled. “I think he was kind of surprised I picked up. More strange looks when we see him next I guess,” he grinned.
“Scripts already?” Keira frowned, “but we have like two months yet or something.”<br>
“Yeah,” he replied thinking. “Ah well at least it will give us something to do while the Hope’s are away.”
Keira gave him a sceptical look but couldn’t help grinning. “Thought you’d just stay here did you?” she teased, making him blush.
“Well I thought, you know, you could use some company and erm… it might…” he stammered before trying another tact. “Have I told you how beautiful you are yet today?” He grinned.
“You’re unbelievable,” Keira sighed, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Thanks babe,” Orlando said, of course taking it as a complement. He got on his knees on the floor, grovelling at her feet like a begging puppy. “So can I stay? Pretty please. Can I, can I, can I?” he pouted and blinked at her, trying to look as forlorn as possible and melt her heart. It worked, after she was done laughing she leant forward and kissed him on the tip of his nose.
“Of course you can. I would like that,” she laughed again. “What have I let myself in for?” she said aloud as Orlando pranced around the room in delight before running back next door to tell Ben and Hannah.
The image I have built up, the man I have created within my mind, does not exist. I know this now and always did but sometimes I forget. Sometimes I can believe all that I wish to believe, that one day I will see him riding across the meadow to rescue me. The kiss we share when he raises me in his arms will be one unknown to all human kind. An ecstasy not experience by any mortal of this earth or any other. The kiss of leaves falling on a mirrored lake, of rain in a drought.
