To be honest, I've never even seen CSI. But I used to watch The Practice a lot, and I watch NYPD Blue religiously.

“Before we let you go,” Dr. Fletcher said as he came into the room. “I’m going to have to ask you to give me a DNA sample. It’s a simple thing, really. A few dabs on the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab.”
“Why would I need to do that?” Orlando asked, his quiet temper evident in his face. Rose looked at him from over the top of her cup. She made a small shake of her head and furrowed her brows. Orlando caught the look and sighed. “Fine. Let’s do it then.”
Dr. Fletcher nodded. “Come with me then please.” Orlando followed the doctor, Rose close behind him. “Ah, Miss Byrne, would you mind staying here.”
She blinked. “Um, yeah…sure.” She reached for Orlando’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “I’ll be here.” He nodded and she watched them disappear. A nurse came into the room Orlando had been left in. She didn’t smile and she didn’t speak a word to him, except to tell him to open his mouth. She swabbed the right side, then the left, between the cheek and gum line. As she was putting the two long cotton swabs into a plastic bag, Orlando chewed on his nails. “Where do I go now?”
“Dr. Fletcher said you and your friend can go home.”
“No, no! I’m not going anywhere until I’m sure this girl is going to be alright.”
The nurse went to the door and opened it, obviously not caring. “That’s what I was told.” She left him then and he grunted. After a moment, he stepped into the empty hallway and looked around. No one was in sight, so he went to find Rose. She was drinking another coffee, still in the waiting room. He motioned for her to follow him and she left her unfinished coffee behind. They wandered down the hallways, ducking in and out of rooms to try and find the girl Orlando felt they were accusing him of attacking. After two dozen or so wrong rooms, Rose had a thought. “Didn’t the doctor say she would be in recovery after they cleaned her up a but?”
“That’s right!” Orlando grabbed her by the hand and ran down the hallway to find the lifts. When he found them, there was a sign to tell them which floor to go to. Once they rode up the two floors, they got off and were immediately stopped by the night nurse. “May I help you,” he asked, his voice deep. “
I’m here to see someone.” Orlando searched for the right words to say. “She’s…” “The girl that just got out of surgery?”
He blinked. “Yes! How did you know she was the one I was talking about?”
The nurse shrugged, motioning for them to follow him. “We’ve only got three people in here right now, and two of them are male.” He smiled as he opened a door. “She’s in here, sleeping.”
“Thank you so much.”
“Just be sure to come and get me if she wakes up or gets sick or anything.”
Orlando nodded and the nurse left them. Rose bit her lip. “Do you want me to wait out here?”
“You can come in with me if you’d like.” She nodded and they both went in the small room. Machines seemed to be everywhere, beeping and monitoring. The blinds were drawn to let in the shaded light of the slowly rising sun. Eerie shadows lurked about and shrouded the still person lying in the only bed in the room. Her frame was small, almost lost in the blankets, pillows, and machines she was hooked up to. Her left shoulder was unclothed, but wrapped up tightly. Her nose was bandaged and the rest of her head was all but mummified by bandages. The bit of her face that still showed was broken up by stitches, bruises and cuts. Orlando took a chair from the back of the room and brought it to her bedside, sitting down with his heart in his throat. “She’s just a child,” he whispered, choking back a sob. Rose sat as well, feeling close to inadequate. “Why…” he began. “How could anyone do this to another person? Especially a child!”
Rose watched silently as his angry eyes clouded with tears. “I don’t understand a lot of things people do.”
“I didn’t do this, Rose.” He turned to look at her, his tone pleading, begging her to believe him. “I swear I could have never done this. I don’t care how much I had to drink.”
“Alright,” she nodded, rubbing his back. “I believe you, Orlando. I do. You could never do this to anyone.” She looked at the girl. “And you very well could have saved her life tonight. In the end, no one will be accusing you, but calling you a hero.”
“I didn’t do this to be a hero!” he hissed, trying to keep his voice low. “I don’t want publicity from this. It was the right thing to do. There was no other choice!”
“I know.” Knowing it was the situation Orlando was mad at, and not her, Rose simply offered a reassuring smile. “I know.”
How old is Bella again?
Hmm.. I'd be a little concerned and angered too if someone took my DNA sample. No good can come of that. Actually, its reminding me of the movie Gattaca. Have you watched it? Ethan Hawke is delish btw1

^ I Have never seen it
Awwww, this is becoming depressing. Good job Rose is there to keep him under some kind of control. The ppor kids gonna wake up and scream if she sees Orlando there. and not in a good way.
How can rose even consider that he might have done it. DRunk or not drunk. How can the reader even consider it. Yuur darn good writing thats how.

woo it's excellent. I just love the way you can make me feel what your characters feel. even though there's a lot of angst - did you know that this word also exists in german? - and despair in here.

“I refuse to go anywhere,” he told her. “Not until I know she’s going to be alright.” He sat back and rubbed his eyes, exhausted. When next he opened them and saw the time on his watch, it was ten in the morning. The girl in the bed lay just as she had been all night, and Rose was curled up in her chair fast asleep. Orlando yawned and stretched, then stood up and paced to the window. Rose, sensing the movement in the room, snapped awake and looked around. “Sorry,” Orlando whispered. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
She shook her head, still groggy. “It’s fine.” Her brown eyes scanned the room, trying to get her bearings. “What time is it?”
“A little after ten.” He smiled with affection. “Go on home, Rose. I’m fine here now. Really.”
“No.” She sat up and ran her hands through her hair. “No, I’m not leaving.”
With a small smile, Orlando went and sat back down beside her, lacing his fingers together. “It would make me feel better if I knew you were home and got some rest. Honestly, you being here just adds to my stresses.”
“You sure know how to make a girl feel wanted,” she mumbled. “Can I at least get you something to eat before I go?”
“It would be most appreciated.” He asked her to get him some strong coffee and anything she found that might look halfway edible. When she had gone, he pulled his chair closer to the bedside and sat to study the sleeping figure. The first thing her noticed was her hands. She had small, delicate fingers with nails that had obviously been nibbled on. A smile graced his lips, knowing that was something they both had in common. A gold ring with three garnets encircled the ring finger of her right hand. He thought it odd that someone so young would have a ring like that. He remembered seeing a bag with her belongings hanging in the washroom. Curiosity brought him to his feet and made him retrieve the bag to inspect its contents. Not that there was much to find. The clothes she had been wearing had been discarded, he assumed, as they were missing. He found a simple silver cross on a string of ribbon with a clasp. Glancing at her, he frowned at set the cross down. Black sandals, hair ties, and a book of matches were all that was there. Taking the matches back into the room with him, he sat and examined the small thing. She must smoke, he decided, reading the gold lettering on the red package. “Bella Luna” it said. A place he had never heard of, though he didn’t have a chance to explore the town yet. Flipping the flap open, he found a little message written inside. “Congrats on a 23 year old wish coming true.” Closing it, Orlando searched her features. There was no way this girl could be twenty three years old. Perhaps it was just a book of matches she had picked up. Rose came back with a thermos of coffee and a box of muffins. When he saw this, Orlando scowled. “Rose, I said you didn’t have to stay.”
“I’m not,” she quickly told him. “But I have the feeling you might be here for awhile so I thought I’d keep you stockpiled.” Setting everything down, she sighed. “Has she woken up yet?”
“No, not…” A knock at the door made them pause, and a young nurse poked her head is. Seeing Rose and Orlando she smiled as she entered. “Hi. How’s our patient doing?”
“Uh…” Orlando glanced at Rose. “She’s the same as when I got here.”
The nurse nodded. “She should be waking up soon.” They watched as the nurse took the girl by the wrist and timed her pulse. Satisfied with her findings, she checked all the machines, pushing a button or two. “Her stats seem to be pretty good. “ Looking up from the girl, she smiled. “Are you family?”
Rose said yes while Orlando said no. They looked at each other and stammered to explain the small discrepancy. “I’m her cousin,” Rose said quickly. “And I’m her…her…” “You two look really familiar,” the nurse suddenly said. She put her hands on her hips and narrowed her eyes. “Do I know you from somewhere?”
As much as he didn’t want to play this card, he wanted to pull attention from a reason for his being there. “We’re actors,” he said with false shyness. “You might of heard of Troy.”
“Oh my gosh!” she squealed. “I can’t believe I didn’t recognize you! Paris and Briseis!” They nodded, smiling. “I just loved that movie, I saw it at least five times, and…” A beeper on her belt went off. She checked it and sighed. “Well, I’ve got to go. Please let someone know as soon as she wakes up. It was so nice to meet you!” She grinned and waved at them before leaving. Rose giggled. “Are you sure you want me to leave you alone now?”
“Yes,” he chuckled. “I’ll be just fine.

Orlando startled, hearing motion in the room. He opened his eyes and saw the girl was moving, her brows draw together. Pulling his chair closer to the bed, he reached out to clasp her hand, finding it much smaller than his own hands. She cried out ever so softly, but as he rubbed his thumb on the inside of her palm, her features smoothed and she seemed to calm. Her eyes opened to slits and she groaned. Orlando didn’t move. She turned her head to see him, confusion in the gray of her eyes. “Where am I?” “Brisbane General Hospital,” he told her, somewhat surprised that her soft voice was American. “You’ve been here for a little while, now.”
She closed her eyes again. “What happened to me? How did I get here?” Her words were somewhat slurred, and he assumed she was fighting off any medication that might have been given to her. “I brought you in last night. Do you remember what happened?”
“No.” Her answer was whispered. When she said nothing more for a few moments, he assumed she had fallen back asleep. But as he started to get up, she held fast to his hand. “Don’t go.” There was a pleading tone to her child like voice, and he sat back down, something making him stay. “Please don’t go,” she said again. “I’m afraid…” “There’s nothing to be afraid of.” Tilting his head, he smiled tenderly. “You’re perfectly safe now. But if you want me to stay, I am more than willing.” She relaxed then, but didn’t take her eyes from him. “Can I get you anything? Some water, maybe?” She shook her head, still staring. Orlando was beginning to feel uncomfortable and realized she must have recognized him by now and was wondering what he was doing there. “You’re probably wondering why I’m here.” She said nothing, so he continued. “Well, I was the one to..ah…to find you last night. And I brought you here.”
Her brows came together. “Was I in an accident?”
This made him sit back and blink. “An accident? No, I don’t think it was an accident at all. You don’t remember?” She shook her head. “Alright. Sit tight and I’ll be right back.” She began to protest, but he squeezed her hand. “No worries, darling. I’ve just got to let the doctors know that you’re awake. Alright?” Although reluctant, she nodded and let go of his hand. The nurse from earlier that morning stood behind her station, examining a clipboard of papers in her hand. “Ah, excuse me.”
She looked up, then smiled when she saw who it was. “Well hello again.”
He smiled politely. “Yeah, um, hi…listen. The girl…my friends cousin, she’s woken up.”
“That’s good news,” the nurse said, heading off in the direction of the girls room. “Yeah, but listen. She doesn’t remember what happened last night.”
Stopping just outside the door, the nurse nodded. “She had some pretty serious damage to the cerebral area. Some short term memory loss is to be expected. But no worries. It should come back within a few weeks.” This didn’t comfort him any, but he followed her into the room. The young girl lay exactly as Orlando had left her. “Good morning,” the nurse called cheerily. She checked a few of the machines. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“Tired,” she offered softly. There was fear in her eyes and she looked to Orlando for strength. He sat down and took her hand once more, trying to give a reassuring smile. “What happened to me?”
“Well,” the nurse said, flipping over a few pages on her clipboard. “I was hoping you might be able to tell me that yourself. But first, I need a little bit of information from you.”
Orlando tilted his head. “You alright? If you don’t feel up to it, we can do this later.”
“I’m okay.”
“Great.” The nurse clicked her pen. “First of all, love, what is your full name?”
“Great.” The nurse clicked her pen. “First of all, love, what is your full name?” She looked at Orlando. “Not his name,” the nurse said with a patient smile. “Yours.”
“I…” Panic took her over and her breathing seemed to speed up a bit. “I don’t remember.” If the nurse was concerned, she showed no signs of it. Orlando, on the other hand, stuck his fingers in his mouth, chewing on his nails. “Alright, that’s just fine.” Writing something down, the smile never left the nurse’s face. “Can you tell me a little bit about yourself. Where you’re from? What you’re doing in Brisbane?” The girl shook her head, her eyes welling with tears. “Alright. We’ll try again in a little while, alright?” She now turned her smile to Orlando. “Would you come with me for a moment?”
“I’ll be right back,” he promised, following the nurse out into the hallway. When the door was closed, he continued his noshing. “That’s not good, is it?”
“I’m going to talk with Dr. Fletcher and see if we can get some neuro scans set up for her. Try to relax, Mr. Bloom. I can assure you that any memory loss she has will come back in time. It’s just a matter of how much time.” He nodded, looking at the floor. “Since she doesn’t seem to remember at the moment, would you mind telling me her name?” Pen poised above her clipboard, she looked at him expectantly. He knew if he didn’t give this woman a name, all sorts of red flags would be put up and he’d be asked to leave for sure, if not personally escorted out. And that poor girl in there was so frightened and alone, he couldn’t imagine abandoning her now. Shoving his hands in his pockets to stop the nervous biting of his nails, he found the matchbook that had belonged to her. “Bella,” he thought aloud, remembering the name of the place from which the matches had come. “Alright. Bella what?”
Blinking, he looked up. “Ah…Byrne. Remember?” He forced a small chuckle. “She’s a cousin of Rose’s.”
“Oh that’s right.” She waved it off after writing it down. “Even cousins don’t have the same last name now and then, right?”
“Right.”
“Okay. You try and keep her as calm as possible and I’ll see what I can do about getting her all set up for those scans.”
“Right, thanks.” Taking a deep breath, he went back into the sterile room. The girl had her head turned toward the window, but she moved to watch him as he came back in. “Everything is just fine,” he told her softly, taking his seat beside her once again. “The nurse said she’s going to order some tests to be done on you, but she’s not worried, so neither should you be.”
“I can’t remember my name,” she said, her voice quivering. A tear slid down her cheek and Orlando felt like he had been snapped in two. “Don’t cry, love.” He reached out to wipe her single tear away. “You’ll remember in time. And what matters most is that people who care about you know who you are, right? At least you’ve got that.” Brows drawn together, she looked doubtful. “Then you tell me.”
“I’m sorry?”
“You’re here, so you must know me or care about me, or something. What’s my name?”
His tender brown eyes hid the torment of fear he held captive inside. “Your name is Bella.”
She was motionless for a moment, studying his eyes and his face, trying to find some indication that he was lying. And just as he was afraid of being found out, she looked away. “Bella…” she repeated softly. “And who are you, then? What are you to me?”
Well this was something rare indeed. She had no idea who he was, and why should she? If she couldn’t remember who she was herself, why should she remember some random movie star. Who was to say she even knew who he was before hand? “My name is Orlando.”
She blinked. “Like Orlando, Florida?” He nodded and a slight smile tugged at the corners of her broken lips. “That’s a really weird name.”
A small laugh escaped as he nodded again. “It is, isn’t it? And to answer your second question…well, I worked with your cousin. Rose.”
“Rose…” She bit her lip. “Are we close?”
“Who? You and Rose?”
“All of us.”
“Well…” He thought a moment. “You are Rose don’t really know each other, sad to say. But, I believe that’s why you came to Brisbane. To get to know her better.”
“And you are a co-worker of hers?”
“Yes.” He took a deep breath. “We worked on a project together a little while back. As sad as it is to say, we haven’t worked together since. But we’re still very good friends.”
She nodded, picking at a string on her blanket. “And what about you and I? If you’re such good friends with Rose, yet she and I don’t really know each other…how do you fit in?”
