Epilogue
I entered the house laden with heavy grocery bags. “I’m home!” I called as I set the bags on the kitchen counter, not even having the chance to catch my breath before I felt someone bombarding into me and clutching at my leg. I looked down and laughed at my almost three-year-old daughter, Hannah. “Hey sweetie,” I said with a smile and picked her up to balance her on my hip.
“Hi Mummy,” she said and threw her arms around my neck. “I missed you.” I laughed and brushed a long dark curl behind her ear.
“I missed you too angel.” I kissed her cheek and sat her down on the counter as I heard the tell-tale crash and ‘Ouch’ from the hallway. A second later, the other half of my twins, my three-year-old son, Alex, came into the kitchen rubbing his elbow and trying to hold his soccer ball under one arm at the same time. When he saw me, he dropped his ball and ran over to me. I scooped him up in my now unoccupied arms and swung him around a few times before hugging him closely. “Hey kiddo, how was your day?” I asked and put him back on the floor as I started unpacking the groceries.
“It was great!” he said enthusiastically. “Daddy showed me how to bounce the ball on my head.” He picked up the ball again and threw it up to bounce one time on his head before it bounced off the fridge, onto the counter and into the hall. I giggled and my smile widened when Orli came into the kitchen with the ball in his hands.
“You lose something?” he asked Alex as he sat on his haunches and tousled his son’s dark hair, making it stand even more wildly than before. Alex made to take the ball, but Orli held it behind his back and out of reach with a sly smile. Alex dodged around him trying to get it back and eventually jumped onto Orli, sending him onto his back while Alex sat on his stomach, taking the ball triumphantly. “Hey, no fair! You cheated!” Orli said with a laugh and sat up to tickle him.
Hannah soon made me lower her from the counter and went to jump onto her dad’s back to defend her brother. Orli grabbed her and blew a raspberry on her stomach, while still tickling Alex. I smiled as my children’s sweet laughter filled the house, making my heart flutter happily.
Orli abruptly stopped and picked them up, balancing one on each hip as he came over to give me a kiss. “Hey love, I missed you,” he said with a smile and kissed me again before putting the kids back on their feet. They ran off into the backyard and Orli kneeled before me, looking at my tummy with a smile. “And how’s my boy doing in there?” he asked and put his ear against my stomach while I giggled. He pulled back to look at my stomach incredulously. “No! You’re kidding!” he said in fake shock. He looked up at me sternly. “Tristan here says Mummy forgot to buy milk again,” he said and I smacked my forehead with a groan.
“I knew I forgot something,” I said in frustration which soon turned to amusement as Orli took a carton of milk from the fridge, holding it up with a grin.
“You always forget the milk,” he said and placed a kiss on my nose. “So I asked Sam to bring some by when she came over earlier.” I scrunched up my nose and stuck my tongue out at him, making him laugh and pull me into a hug.
I rested my head on his shoulder and sighed contentedly. “I love you Orli,” I said and looked up at him with a little smile. “So much.” He smiled back and pulled me closer.
“I love you more,” he said and kissed me deeply. I responded and my arms snaked around his neck to pull him closer…
“Eeew,” we heard and pulled apart to see two pairs of brown eyes… a wide-eyed Alex and giggling Hannah. Orli pulled a face at them and they laughed. Leo, our golden retriever, came in and pushed his head under Alex’s hand. “Leo!” Alex said happily and turned to head outside with a tail-wagging Leo hot on his heels. I heard him talking animatedly and a few barks from the dog before they were outside.
I looked back down to see Hannah holding her arms out to Orli, who picked her up and twirled her around a few times before placing her on his shoulders. “You want some ice cream Princess?”
“Yup yup yup!” she replied excitedly and babbled forth as Orli opened the freezer and took out the ice cream. “…and then Darren and Carrie (Caleb and Megan’s kids) came over and we played in the tree house…” I laughed when Orli pulled a face at her speedy rambling.
We made our way into the backyard, where Hannah joined Alex and Leo, playing on the grass. Orli sat down at the one end of our swinging chair and I lay down with my head resting in his lap. I watched my kids running after the dog for a few minutes before looking up at my husband with a smile and he grinned back down at me.
“Sing it, please?” I asked and he gave a little laugh.
“Sing what?” he asked, playing dumb and I hit him playfully as he chuckled.
“You know what…my song.”
He smiled and brushed my hair back from my forehead as he softly sang the song I loved to bits.
Find me here Speak to me I want to feel you I need to hear you
He looked up at the kids and his smile widened as he watched them laughing and running about.
You are the light That’s leading me To the place where I find peace again
You are the strength That keeps me walking You are the hope That keeps me trusting
You are the life to my soul You are my purpose You’re everything
And how can I Stand here with you And not be moved by you
I closed my eyes as I listened to him, smiling at the perfection of the life we created together. I felt Orli’ hand on my very slightly rounded tummy and put mine over his as his soft voice drifted through my head…
Would you tell me How could it be Any better than this
