and awaaaaayyyyy we go!
Shooting stars are rare, indeed. But she saw one streak across the night sky, a bright flash of light swifting falling fast. Raising her eyes up high, she made a wish, hoping with all her might that it may come true.
"Mum, it's for the best," Keira said exasperately into the phone. "Rupert was a git. A big, slimy git.... Miss him? Why would I miss him? I just told you he was a big, slimy git, didn't I? ...The house? Yeah, it's mine now. Yep. All mine...."
The phone conversation took an uprupt change as Keira shrieked, "What do you mean you hinted? ...Oh my God, Mum, you didn't actually...? YOU BASICALLY TOLD HIM! ...I can't believe this, you're supposed to be my mother! ...WHAT? HERE? ...I must've heard you wrong; I thought you said he was coming over here.... WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID? ...MUM!"
The doorbell rang. "Oh, great, Mum, he's here now, I look like sh*t, the house is a mess, you couldn't have given me ten minutes warning?" She made her way down the stairs. "No, Mum, of course my feelings haven't changed. He's still charming and perfect.... NO, I WILL NOT TELL HIM THAT! He's not supposed to know, Mum!"
She collapsed on the couch. momentarily forgetting that someone was outside wanting in. "Oh really, Mum? So I'm supposed to just walk up to him and say, 'Orlando, I'm madly in love with you'?"
"It couldn't hurt," said a voice behind her, making her jump.
"I gotta go, Mum, talk to you later, love you, bye." She snapped the phone shut and whpped around. "How... er... how did you get in here?"
Orlando grinned wickedly. "Door wasn't locked, so I opened it and invited myself in."
She gave him a sarcastic smile. "And you heard... how much of my conversation?"
His smile faded sligtly. "Enough."
Keira was genuinely confused. "Enough? For what?"
He looked her straight in the eye. "Why didn't you tell me?" he asked quietly.
Keira was afraid of what was coming next. "Tell you what, sorry?" she asked back, averting her gaze.
He wasn't fooled, but he played along anyway. "That you loved me," he stated simply.
Keira sighed. "It's not that easy, Or. Sure, it seems easy when it's someone else, but when it's you who's in love?" She shook her head. "Well, since we're here, I guess I'll just go ahead and say it. I. Love. You. I love you, okay? There, you happy?" She threw herself onto the couch and willed herself not to cry.
To her surprise, he sat down next to her and began to0 run his fingers through her hair. "Keira, yes. Of course I'm happy."
She looked at him in surprise. "Seriously?"
He laughed as he took her hand in his. "Seriously. I can't believe you didn't know, Keir. I was certain it was obvious."
Keira's brain hurt. "Sorry, but what's obivous?"
"I'm in love with you, Keira."
Next thing she knew, she was on top of him, kissing him vigorously. Best of all, she noted, he was kissing her just as vigorously back.
Keira thought back to that night nearly three years ago when she had seen the shooting star. Finally, her wish had come true.
