Chapter One: A Wonderful Surprise
It was supposed to be Spring; and not raining like it had been for days. Still, she thought, this was nothing new London weather was usually always awful regardless of what time of the year it was. Keira kept her thoughts to herself as she walked to the kitchen of her spacious apartment and made herself another cup of coffee, her gaze still directed out of the window and at the pouring rain. It was days just like this that she most wished she was still in the Caribbean. She smiled at the thought; she had had an incredible time making the Pirate movies; probably the best of her entire life. Her mind drifted upon wonderful memories, how much fun she had, both on set and on her few breaks as well. Then a special memory came to mind, and her smile had been replaced by a full force grin. They had been on break and Orlando had invited Keira to go with him to the beach; he had been eager to go surfing and she had agreed to keep him company. As he rode the dazzling clear waves of the tranquil Caribbean Sea Keira was content to simply sit upon the beach with her borrowed beach towel and watch. She loved that he was able to look so relaxed carefree, seemingly without a single trouble in the entire world. Keira knew that this was when Orlando looked happiest.
Keira was shaken from her thoughts as she felt a soft hand upon her shoulder. She gave a small jump before she could catch herself and turned quickly.
“God,” she said with surprise. “Rupert next time make some noise will you? Give me some warning?” She turned away from him and allowed her attention to fall back to her coffee.
“I didn’t creep up on you if that’s what you mean,” Rupert replied. “You were just so lost in whatever it was you were thinking about that you didn’t hear me.” He looked at her and gave a concerned smile. “Are you okay?”
She answered with a sigh, collecting her composure. “Yeah I’m fine. I was just ……just thinking.” She shrugged off her vague response but silently hoped he wouldn’t pursue this conversation. She realised too well she was in no real mood to talk.
“Well I have to go,” he said with a smile and Keira smiled back at the realisation she would be able to go back to her thoughts undisturbed. “I have that meeting with my agent,” he told her. “Dinner later?”
Keira nodded. “Sure, pick me around eight.”
Rupert nodded and kissed her forehead before leaving the house. As Keira heard the door closing behind him she sighed once more and went to her wardrobe. She realised she needed some air, and the best way to do that was with an aimless walk. She selected her favourite jacket she left the house only minutes after Rupert, and let the keys slide into her pocket. She started out in the direction of the nearby park, with only her umbrella as company. There was something about walking on the rain that helped her to forget and relax and she knew right now that is the one the thing she needed most.
Not far away, Orlando was likewise taking a walk, with his dog Sidi. He had been back in London for a few weeks already, but had found as he half expected that his relationship with Miranda less than perfect. As glamorous as the life of actors and Actresses seemed in the glossy magazines, all their time apart and living out of suitcases took its toll. Orlando knew that he and Miranda were too different, and maybe it won’t work out at the end. Maybe he needed to try harder? All he knew is he was tired of the fights and disagreements, and was thankful that al least for an hour or so with Sidi he could clear his head. He let Sidi free as he walked slowly behind; watching his dog running about and following ever scent that caught its nose.
Keira had just arrived in the same park Orlando had found himself in, though both totally unaware. For her part, Keira was lost in similar thoughts that consumed her earlier, and she was certainly not paying very much attention as to where she was going. Her mind was still back in the fabulous Caribbean islands while her feet seemed to have a will of their own, and as per usual practice she kept her gaze low, deliberately avoiding eye contact in the hope that she could avoid any attention by over eager fans or photographers.
Orlando raised a brow as he watched Sidi, some yards ahead of him, jump ahead with a friendly bark. His little tail wagged with joy and happiness as he started to run in the direction of what seemed to be a young woman. Orlando started to run after him, already thinking of what to say in apology. Sidi usually wouldn’t do something like this unless he was knew someone; for a fierce beast Sidi was very shy.
“Come back here boy.” Orlando yelled while running after him.
Once again Keira was jolted from her thoughts when she felt something on her hand, Looking down she could see a seemingly friendly black dog sniffing her hand. Strangely, THIS small dog looked familiar and Keira knelt to almost eye level in order to give him a closer look. As she did Sidi licked her hand.
“You are such a good boy aren’t you?” she said with a grin. “Where is your owner?” She rubbed his head and Sidi decided he liked the attention.
Sidi barked as if to answer her question and it was then that the realisation hit her. Lacing her hand on his collar she moved it until she could see the name, and as she did a grin began spreading across her face.
“Sidi, oh I missed you so much,” She hugged the dog and Sidi responded with a friendly pant and barking. There was no doubt but that he was just as happy with the unexpected greeting; his tail swinging faster.
Orlando finally caught up with his dog and the young women who was now kneeling. Orlando had still not seen her face. “I’m sorry miss,” he started, slightly out of breath. “He doesn’t normally run away like that.”
It took only the first word from his voice for Keira to know who he was; she didn’t even need to look up. But as she did so, her grin spread even wider than before as she looked at him. His hair was wet from the rain, making his soft curls more visible, while a slight rosy red filled his cheeks.
Orlando’s eyes went wide when he saw the person that was holding Sidi, as he thought it was no wonder that he went running off the way he had. Sidi had always loved Keira. Grinning Orlando couldn’t help but let his eyes fall to her gorgeous angelic face. Her hair was gathered in a tidy ponytail, with only a few loose strands adorning her face.
“Kei Kei, it’s so good to see you again.” Orlando said with earnest surprise, and Keira stood up in order to hug her friend tightly.
“It’s so good to see you too Lando,” she said, and the very tone of her voice was proof positive that she meant what she said. “I didn’t even know you were in town.” She added, still holding him.
“I’ve been back for a few weeks. But I didn’t know if you were working or not so I didn’t call.” She looked at him and he smiled. “I also….” He went on “…didn’t think Rupert would like it very much even if I did call.” Orlando stood still, holding her, and once again breathing in her remarkable sweet scent.
Keira pulled away and playfully hit his arm. “Hey you know you could have called me. Rupert or no Rupert you are…..you will ALWAYS be my friend. That’s just how it is, and Rupe will have to get used to that. What about you, your new girlfriend don’t have you on a tight leash?”
Orlando laughed, a real laugh, and as he did he wondered how long it had been since he had laughed like that. Last time they were together.
“No, she doesn’t have me on a tight leash; I can come and go as I please.”
“Ohhhhhh,” Keira giggled as in admiration.
“Truth be told,” Orlando went on, “she isn’t even here. Though things aren’t so great.”
Keira’s smile disappeared and was replaced with a look of concern.
“No?”
Orlando shrugged. “Right now she is out of town, in a photo shoot which I’m very thankful about because it makes her happy. So I decided to come home to clean my head for awhile.” Gently and without thinking he moved a strand of hair from behind her ear making her blush.
“Look,” Keira said. “Let’s not talk about that. We have so much to catch up on. How long will you be in town for?” A faint blush was still playing upon her cheeks.
“I don’t know yet,” he answered as his own smile increased. “I guess for a long time now. But we are right we DO have so much to catch up on. This has been a great surprise.”
Keira nodded. “Yes it was, its funny I was thinking about you earlier, remembering our breaks during the film and how I used to watch you surfing.”
He chuckled. “Oh I feel very special now.” He kissed her cheek. “I think about that too, a lot. I honestly can say that was one of the best times of my life.”
“Mine too, mine too.” She replied too quickly and turned her face away in order to conceal her expression at hearing his words. She looked down at Sidi, and noticed he was seated between them both and looking up as if to watch the entire exchange.
Orlando looked down and laughed as he patted the dog’s head, he then turned his attention straight back to Keira. “What do you say about a nice warm coffee and an even warmer chat? Unless you are….you know…busy or something.” Orlando spoke fast while silently hoping that she would say yes.
She smiled, took in a breath and instantly assumed to character of one of her many roles. “I would say that sounds perfect in my opinion, indeed like heaven Mr Bloom.” Keira giggled.
“Good, my house then?”
She nodded. “Sure, it’s been awhile since I’ve been there.”
Orlando placed the leash on Sidi and gently placed an arm around her waist, Keira moved closer and placed hers around his as they made their way out of the park, laughing together as if at some private joke. For both of them it was like old times all over again, how they would enjoy each others company, talk and laugh about silly things. Keira was now in a wonderful mood, and couldn’t be spoiled no matter how bad the weather was. Suddenly, without expecting to be, she was happy; happier than she had ever been for some time.
Enjoy!
