BETTER DAYS
Chapter One
Taking one last glance at herself in the full-length mirror, Keira Knightley rejoined the other chattering women in the foyer of the large house. Glancing up the huge staircase, a smile fell upon her lips as she caught sight of Kelly Bell, looking unbelievably ravishing in a white gown fit to perfection. The anxious chatter had fallen completely silent, as all eyes fell upon the bride making her way down the stairs.
As the rest of the bridesmaids made their ways towards the awaiting limousines, Kelly pulled Keira aside. Although their time at school had long since ended, Keira and Kelly had kept in touch, and although she was extremely busy, Keira had made time to see her friend get married to the man of her dreams. In fact, she had arrived late the previous night and would have to fly out the next morning, but being at this wedding meant the world to both of them.
“Ya know, Keira…” Kelly giggled. “There’s an unwritten law that the maid of honor isn’t allowed to look better than the bride…”
“Well dont worry Kelly…That is definatly not happening!” Keira shot back, smiling at her beaming friend. “You look gorgeous…I’m so glad I could make it.”
“Me too!” She smiled back as they made their way to the limo.
“Kelly…umm…” Keira’s face suddenly fell somber, a nervous look taking over her delicate features. “Is he gonna be here?”
Dropping her eyes to the ground, Kelly nodded ever so slightly. “Yeah, Keira…He promised me he’d be here…”
Feeling her heat skip a beat in her chest, Keira didn’t know what to expect. It had been well over a year since she had seen him and months since they had last spoken. Sighing heavily, Keira closed her eyes wondering what the future could possibly have in store for them.
“Keira…Maybe the time is finally…”
Shaking her head slightly, Keira let out another deep and shaky breath. “I don’t think the time will ever be right.”
“Sorry…”
Quickly attempting to mask her anxiety with a smile, Keira shook her head. “Forget it! I’m just fine…Let’s get you to the church so that you can marry that fine piece of man!”
Stepping through the giant archway at the back of the church, Keira let her eyes take in everything about the beautiful scene. From the candles to the stained glass windows to Kelly’s fiancé nervously shifting from foot to foot at the front of the long aisle, everything was absolutely perfect. Assuring herself that she wasn’t looking for a mop of curly hair, Keira’s eyes lingered on the guests that had already taken their seats. A slight gasp escaped her lips, as she found the only person she wasn’t looking for.
There he sat, slightly off to the side, his head tilted downwards towards the floor. Her attempts to look away were futile, as her eyes were inexplicably drawn to his muscular shoulders, adorned in a dark blue jacket that led up to his long neck, eventually topped off with those curls. After all this time, just seeing him from behind made her weak in the knees. At that moment, Keira was aware of only one thing…She was finally in the same room as Orlando Bloom.
Without warning, the music began, drawing his eyes from their deep study of his shoelaces to the procession down the center aisle. Knowing that it was inevitable, he rose his eyes even further, taking in the sight of some of his closest friends making their way towards the front of the church. As the last of the couples had taken their places, she took her place, beginning a slow deliberate march up the aisle. Eyes fixated on something directly in front of her, he noticed the unwavering concentration on her face, as she fought hard not to look at anyone…not to look at him.
Biting hard on his bottom lip, his eyes explored every inch of the body he had once known so well. Dressed in a baby blue floor length gown that clung and flowed perfectly against her every curve, she was the image of perfection. With her hair tied and curled upon her head, the light from the open door behind her created an angelic glow upon her tanned skin, and at that moment, Orlando was sure he had never seen anything more beautiful. Everyone in the church turned into a whirring blur of colors, and at that moment, time stood still, leaving only Keira Knightley.
Taking a quick note of the directions, Orlando made his way to the reception hall. Immediately upon approach, he became very aware that this wasn’t just any London restaurant. Taking in the sight with his eyes, Orlando breathed a heavy sigh, noticing that the place may have changed its name, but looked the same as the last time he had been there…with Keira.
“Come on Orlando! Tell me where we’re going!” Keira giggled, the blindfold securely tied around her eyes.
“We’re almost there.” He chuckled, interlocking his fingers with hers as he led her into the restaurant’s back room. Dimming the lights, he pulled her to the large glass wall, through which the countryside and and small lake could be seen. Smiling in approval, Orlando lightly kissed her bare shoulder. “We’re here.”
Quickly removing the blindfold, Keira’s eyes went wide as she looked around the empty room. The moon reflected off the water, lighting the room in a dancing glow, as the candles around the room flickered in the most romantic of ways. The floor was littered with red and white rose petals, trailing to a small table in the middle of the room. Off to the side sat a quiet grand piano, while a soft music already filled the otherwise silent room.
Turning her eyes toward Orlando, Keira couldn’t help but fight back tears at the look on his face. A light smile dance across his lips as he watched her watch him and his eyes sparkled in the dimly lit room.
“Orlando…” Her voice caught in her throat as she stared at him with those eyes that could melt even the coldest of hearts. Unable to find the right words, Keira stuttered for a moment before throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into the tightest of hugs. “Thank you.” She choked out, the tears pooling in her eyes as his warm, gentle hands meticulously caressed the small of her back. Settling his large hands in the area where her soft skin met the silky fabric, Orlando pulled back slightly to meet her incredulous gaze. Reaching out to tuck one strand of stray blonde hair behind her ear, he cupped her face with one hand, his voice taking on the softest of tones. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Love.”
Suddenly falling silent, Keira walked behind Kelly, carrying the train of her dress as she smiled at her new husband. Taking notice of the reception hall, Keira felt her heart skip a beat as the flurry of memories overtook her.
“Did I tell you how gorgeous you look tonight?” Orlando whispered, reaching across the table for her hand.
“Only about a hundred times.” Keira smiled softly, as her fingers relaxed into his warm hand. Lightly caressing her fingers, he led her to the dance floor, pulling her close as they swayed to a familiar melody. Lost completely in his smoky brown orbs, Keira sighed contently, the smile never leaving her lips. Absentmindedly, she ran her fingers along the back of his neck, eliciting shivers down his spine.
“I love you Keira Kngihtley.” He whispered, leaning his forehead against hers as her fingers got lost in his curls.
Looking up to meet his smiling eyes, Keira bit her bottom lip, speaking in the tone that she had reserved only for him. “I love you Orlando…I love you too…”
Trying to contain her anxiety, Keira glanced around the large room that held so many memories. Never in a million years did she expect to be here again, especially today, with Orlando sitting across the room. Thoughts of approaching him invaded her mind as she contemplated things she could say to break the tension when they inevitably came face to face. As she wracked her brain with possible scenarios, she was jolted from her reverie as a body collied with hers.
Orlando’s eyes made their way towards Keira's. He had been inside the resturant for a grand total of ten minutes and he had already managed to run into the exact person he was desperatly trying to avoid. He quickly muttered an apologie for running into her, before quickly retreating to the oppisite side of the resturant.
From his corner he turned, his eyes immediatly finding Keira. She was staring at the floor, nervously shifting from foot to foot. That wasn’t the Keira he knew…She was usually the life of the party, cracking jokes left and right. Beckoning her to look at him with his eyes, she eventually broke down, her eyes darting up to his. Quickly looking away, Keira felt the butterflies in her stomach go into overdrive.
Kelly caught sight of Orlando…his eyes focused securely on Keira, who was joking around at the moment with Matthew. Stepping towards him, she embraced him tightly and thanked him for coming as he congratulated her.
“Talk to her.” Kelly whispered.
“Does she hate me?”
“It wasn’t just you.” Kelly assured him. “You guys made a choice…Maybe now is the right time…”
Shaking his head, Orlando let out a dejected sigh. “Will it ever be right?”
“Orlando Bloom!” Kelly shoved him lightly, disappointed at his cynicism. “That’s not the guy I know. If nothing else, unweird it between you two.”
“Unweird it?” Orlando teased.
“Yeah…Go for it!”
Watching her lost in conversation for another moment, Orlando stepped towards her, his hand lightly grazing her shoulder. Immediately at the contact, she stilled, a sharp intake of breath catching in her throat, as they stood, for a brief second, frozen in time. Without turning around, Keira closed her eyes, knowing who was touching her. She knew it as if by instinct. The feel of his soft hand on her bare skin, the presence he exuded…everything about him assured her that Orlando Bloom was now standing there, his hand lightly placed upon her shoulder, sending chills throughout her body. For the third time that evening. Her mouth now dry, Keira’s tongue darted from her lips as she turned ever so slightly to face him.
His gaze lingered on her delicate face before focusing on the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. Biting hard on his bottom lip, Orlando stifled back the emotions that were threatening to spill out at the mere sight of her. Staring deeply into her pools of hazel emotions, words were not necessary. Everything he needed could be found right there in her eyes.
Stepping even closer to her, they shared the most intimate of conversations, as neither of them uttered a word. A slight smile crept over his anxious features as he took in everything about the woman standing in front of him. It may have been over a year since they last saw each other, but as they held tightly to each other’s passionate stares, for just a moment, none of that mattered.
I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don't bother me
Finally finding his voice, Orlando was the first to speak. “Hi…” He whispered, his voice caught in his throat.
“Hey.” She smiled, chuckling awkwardly to alleviate the tension swirling around them.
“You…um…you look…” He shook his head, almost as if in disbelief before a warm smile graced his features. “You look absolutely amazing.”
Keira felt the heat rise to her cheeks as she practically melted under his stare. Only Orlando Bloom could give her a simple compliment and make her an absolute puddle of mush. Quickly trying to maintain her composure, Keira joked coyly. “Well you still look like you have a dead animal on your head.”
“At least some things never he change.” He smiled, a hint of sadness evident.
can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I'm not afraid to cry every once in a while
“Yeah…” She trailed off, glancing anywhere but into his imploring eyes.
“Keira…” He whispered, reaching for her hand.
Closing her eyes, Keira took a deep breath and turned away from him. He stepped close behind her, gripping her warm shoulders with his soft hands. Leaning close to her ear, his voice escaped his throat in a low, husky whisper. “What if now is right?”
Letting his words replay in her mind for another brief moment, Keira wondered if it was possible. Maybe they could work out. Maybe it would be okay. What if now was the right time? Confused, Keira let out a contemplative sigh. “How would we know?” She asked in a bare whisper.
“Somehow you knew it wasn’t right last time.” His hand lightly urged her to face him again, and as she did, the sparkle of her vibrant eyes seemed to dim with a hint of sadness.
“You know it wasn’t…”
Biting his lip, Orlando shook his head. “In my head I knew…”
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I'm ok
But that's not what gets me
“But your heart didn’t agree?” Keira questioned, already knowing the answer all to well.
“Maybe it still doesn’t.” He whispered, his voice filled with a variance of emotions. Lightly placing his hand under her chin, Orlando lifted her face, locking his passionate brown eyes into hers.
“Keira…”
Reaching for her, Orlando let his hand lightly brush against the curve of her soft cheek. God, how he had missed this woman. Staring deeply into her eyes that were gazing at him with the most incredulous expression, Orlando couldn’t help but feel his heart break over the time that they had spent apart.
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
Looking on from the sidelines, the Kelly and Matthew smiled at each other, hoping that it could finally be right for Orlando and Keira. Pulling him into a huddle, a devilish grin crept onto Kelly’s features.
“Orlando and Keira are doing pretty well on their own, but knowing them, they could use a little help…” She began laying out her plan, glancing at the others.
As the night wore on, Keira was pulled in a thousand different directions, while Orlando mingled with the others. Finally plopping down in a chair with an exhausted sigh, Keira watched as the newlyweds twirled around the dance floor, gazing adoringly at each other. As she watched then, a small smile of relief crept over her features.
“Hey Keira!” Jack greeted her, a charming smile on his face. Extending his hand dramatically, he asked her to dance. Accepting his invitation, she stepped onto the dance floor, and the two settled into a slightly awkward rhythm and comfortable conversation about where their careers were taking them. Glancing around, Keira caught sight of dancing with Kelly and Orlando who appeared to be getting rather cozy. Kelly lightly nodded at Jack, and they slowly began dancing towards each other. Matthew noddedto the DJ, making sure another slow song began, and although Keira attempted to pull away from Jack, he just kept on dancing until they were right next to Orlando and Kelly.
“Ah, if it isn’t the next woman on my list!” Jack smiled at Kelly.
Releasing Keira, Jack cut in on Orlando and Kelly . Glancing slyly at Orlando and Keira, he grinned. “Sorry guys, I made a bet with Matthew that I could dance with every woman here tonight…and this is one bet I plan on winning.”
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was tryin' to do
Shaking his head and chuckling slightly, Orlando looked at Keira, who was also smiling. “He hasn’t changed.”
“Not at all.” Keira giggled, looking around the dance floor which she was now stranded in the middle of.
“Ya know…” He whispered, a smile obviously tugging the corner of his lips. “We look kinda dumb just standing out here on the dance floor…”
“Is that your lame way of asking me to dance Bloom?”
“Did it work?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Keira sighed, a huge grin taking over her face.
It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I'm doin' It
It's hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I'm alone
Still Harder
He reached out, taking her hand in his while his other arm lightly rested across her waist. Her hand found its way to his shoulder, as they began to move to the slow, melodic music. There was an awkward tension between them, but at the same time, it was a comfortable one.
Looking down at her, Orlando couldn’t help but remember all the good times they had shared with each other. It may have been a year, but, as much as he hated to admit it, his adoration for this woman had not faded. Stepping closer, Orlando wrapped his arm tighter around her waist, drawing her small body into his own. In reaction, her hand moved from his shoulder to the back of his neck. A slight gasp escaped his lips at the feel of her hand against his bare skin.
Getting up, getting dressed, livin' with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken
By now, the side of his face was pressed firmly against hers, his lips lingering dangerously close to her bare and unbelievably inviting shoulder. Both of his hands rested on the small of her back, while hers found their way to his neck, unconsciously drawing small circles with her sweet fingers. Breathing in a deep and dramatic sigh, Orlando pulled her closer if it was even possible, intoxicated by the scent that was distinctly Keira.
What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
Closing her eyes, she fought back the tears, taking in everything that she had missed for the last year. She could feel his gentle hands caressing her back, and she could hear his heart racing in his chest. How could she have let this go? Was she going to let it go again? Could this finally be right?
“Missed you.” He whispered against her earlobe, his warm breath sending chills down her spine.
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
Burying her face into his shoulder, she stifled back a moan. Her palms were getting sweaty and her heart was pounding erratically, yet the more she tried to control it, the stronger the emotions grew.
Pulling back ever so slightly, Orlando pressed his forehead firmly against Keira’s, eyes still closed. Hers fluttered open at the sudden change of body contact and she admired Orlando’s stunning features so close to her own. She studied his chocolate brown curls down to his perfectly smooth forehead resting so warmly against her own, his peacefully closed eyes, chiseled jaw line, and his soft, full lips. Almost as if by forgotten instinct, the soft cushions of her fingertips found their way to his chin, caressing it with the most intimate of touches.
Opening his eyes under the warmth of her touch, Orlando’s face tingled wherever her soft fingers lingered. Familiarizing herself with the features that were forever imprinted upon her memory, Keira’s soft fingertips brushed Orlando’s bottom lip. Pursing his lips together, a soft kiss fell upon her roaming fingers. Caught up in quite possibly the most sensual moment of his life, Orlando’s tongue darted from the confines of his mouth, moistening both his parched lips and her delicate finger.
What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
In unconscious response, Keira licked her own lips, sending Orlando into sensory overload. A slight groan escaping his lips, he pulled her body firmly against his own, never breaking their fervent gaze. Following her lead, his hand found its way to her face, his knuckles brushing across her warm cheek. With his thumb on her chin and his fingers lightly splayed across her delicate jaw, he prepared to do something that he had waited well over a year to do. Tilting her head with his loving fingers, Orlando moistened his lips one more time, as Keira closed her eyes, anxiously awaiting the feelings that had eluded her for way too long.
Within seconds, his lips were brushing hers in the sweetest of kisses, as he firmly captured her top lip between his own. Pulling back to revel in the warmth of their shared breath, Orlando released a breath sigh, as Keira’s lips found his again. She pressed her lips forcefully to his, tugging with a secret desire upon his bottom lip.
As their bodies continued to sway to the music, their lips relearned a dance that was both distant and dear to them at the same time. A tiny whimper escaped her lips as his tongue sought entrance to the warmth of her mouth. Surrendering to his passionate lips, her mouth opened and his tongue delved inside, exploring and tasting gently.
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
As her fingers sifted through his silky curls, Keira pulled back, breathless and in total shock. “We can’t…” She gasped, tears suddenly forming in her eyes.
“Love, what is it?” A confused expression took over his features, as he stared at her.
“I’m leaving tonight. We’re both gonna go back to…This isn’t right.” She whispered, pushing away from him.
“Keira…wait…”
Not seeing that loving you
That's what I was trying to do
Ooohhh....
But she was gone.

Unable to find the right words, Keira stuttered for a moment before throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into the tightest of hugs. “Thank you.” She choked out, the tears pooling in her eyes as his warm, gentle hands meticulously caressed the small of her back.
Letting his words replay in her mind for another brief moment, Keira wondered if it was possible. Maybe they could work out. Maybe it would be okay. What if now was the right time? Confused, Keira let out a contemplative sigh. “How would we know?” She asked in a bare whisper.
