Title: The Letter Rating: PG Genre: Drama/Romance/Fantasy/History Disclaimer: I do not know, own, or even breathe the same air as Keira Knightley, Kate Bosworth, or Orlando Bloom. This story is fictional, set in a time when Orlando decides that acting isn't his thing anymore. For purposes of this story, he does not, nor has ever known Keira knightley. When you see the name "Kira", think "Keira". Oh, and the teaser sucks. Sorry girls. Teaser: Kate threw her coat over the railing with a careless air. Her blue eyes fell on Orlando, still at his desk and obviously unaware she had come home. His head was bent and he looked to be reading something. “Have you moved once today from that desk?” As soon as she spoke, Orlando jumped and shoved whatever it was he held into a bottom drawer and closed it with haste. “Kate, when did you get back?”
“About five minutes ago,” she sighed. Narrowing her eyes, she crossed her arms. “What were you reading?”
“Nothing.” He knew his answer had come too quick. Standing, he climbed the few steps to wrap his hands around her small waist and gave her a winning smile. “I’m glad you’re home. I missed you.”
In an icy tone, she asked, “Did you really even notice I was gone? Ever since you bought that thing you’ve been obsessed with it. I’m beginning to think you’d prefer to marry the desk over me.”
“Don’t be silly,” he laughed, keeping his tone soft. “I’ve made reservations for us at Vino’s.”
As hard as she tried not to, Kate smiled with excitement. “You did?” Orlando nodded with a grin. “Baby, it takes a lifetime to get a reservation there. How did you do it?”
“I used to be a star, remember? I still have some pull here and there. Go on and get ready. We should leave in a few hours.” Kissing her nose, he smiled and watched as she ran upstairs to get ready for dinner. As soon as she was out of sight, he turned to look at the desk again and the drawer that held the strange letters. Everything in him wanted to sit down and write a reply, knowing this girl he should not even be able to converse with was waiting for his letter. He knew she was seeking his advice about this arranged marriage. A part of him, a big part wanted to tell her not to marry a man who was only going to leave her soon to join a war that she didn’t even know was going to happen. He didn’t want to lose those precious few letters…he didn’t want to lose her. But maybe it was time to let go. Maybe it was time to let her stay in the past, and let Kate be his future. With tentative steps, he made his way back to the desk. Opening the top drawer, he gathered his quill and ink pot and the wax stamp. As he put them away with shaking fingers, he sighed and whispered, “Goodbye…Kira.”
April 7, 2007
Orlando smiled to himself as he waited by the front door of his New York apartment. It was almost seven and Kate would be home soon. Everything had to be perfect, so the candles wouldn’t be lit until the last possible moment. Through the rain, he saw a flash of headlights as she pulled into the driveway at the side of the building. Dashing into the dining room, he grabbed a book of matches from the table and lit the three pillar candles that sat in the middle. Soft light penetrated the darkness, casting a warm glow over the meal of tofu turkey, potatoes, and salad he had expertly set out. The front door opened just as he slid the matches into a kitchen drawer. “Orlando?” His name echoed down the hallways, followed by her footsteps. “Baby, are you ho…” Kate Bosworth rounded the corner and stopped, the candlelight catching her blue eyes. “Baby?” she asked again, softer. Orlando stepped from the darkness of the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her from behind. A smile tugged at her lips as she reached up to touch the side of his face. “What’s all this?”
“Dinner,” he answered, kissing the palm of her hand. She blinked and pushed her long blonde hair behind her ears as she turned to face him. “I see that it’s dinner, but what’s the occasion? Why is everything so fancy? I feel underdressed.”
“You’re not underdressed. Overdressed, maybe, but I’ll help you with that after dinner.” She smirked and he grinned. “…they bought it.”
She turned stiff in his arms. “Are you serious?” She tried to read his eyes and his grin only grew wider. “Baby, are you serious?”
“Yes!” he exclaimed. “JP called me this afternoon! He said they’re going to do a first run printing of 100,000 copies…hardcover!”
All of the color left Kate’s face as she gasped in a state of shock. “Holy sh*t…” Orlando nodded to her soft exclamation. “Holy sh*t!”
“I know!” He kissed her, almost violently, in exhilaration. “And…” “There’s an and?”
“There’s an and. He said that the company will most likely want me to do a forty city signing tour in the States!”
“Oh my gosh, Orlando!” Now she kissed him. “Your first book! Baby, I am so proud of you. SO proud!”
“Come on,” he laughed. “Come sit and eat.”
“I don’t know if I can now. I’m too excited.” She watched as he pulled her chair out for her, then sat. After he slid her closer to the table, he went to sit in his own chair directly across from her.
“Orlando, I take back all the grief I gave you about giving up acting,” she told his over a dessert of chocolate mousse and berries. “It’s alright, darling. I forgive you.”
She shook her head in protest. “No, I really am sorry. I knew you wanted to write and I was anything but supportive. I’m an awful girlfriend.”
“Maybe you’ll be a better wife,” he said just above a whisper. “What?” She took another spoonful of mousse and put it in her mouth. Stopping, she made a face as though she had eaten something she shouldn’t have. As she put her fingers to her lips, her tongue pushed out a diamond ring. Taking it in her hand, she looked at it. Her eyes widened and again she said, “What?!”
Orlando smiled. “I said, maybe you’ll be a better wife.” he took the ring from her and dipped it into his glass of water to rinse it off. Drying it on a napkin, he looked at her. “So what do you say?”
“What do I say?” she exclaimed. “What do I say to what?”
With a chuckle, Orlando took the ring, got out of his seat, and went down on one knee beside her chair. “Kate,” he said softly, taking her hand in his. “I always felt my life was missing something. Even when everything was going perfectly. Until I met you, I didn’t even know what perfection was. Please, would you do me the honor of letting me be your husband and showing you how much your perfect love means to me, everyday, for the rest of our lives?”
“Yes!” she cried without hesitation, letting him slip the ring on her finger. “A thousand times, yes.”
He stood and pulled her to her feet, taking her in his arms and kissing her. “I love you, Kate. I love you so much.”
“I love you too, baby.” She smiled up at him. “How about me finish dessert upstairs?”
With a grin, he scooped her into his arms. “Sounds like a good idea to me.”
#nosmileys
