Between the Tiger's Claws
Keira Knightley sobbed as she watched her baby being taken away from her. The nurse had came earlier that morning, claiming the family who had adopted little Nicholas was ready to have him now. She never dreamed this day would come, but it did. She never meant to have him ripped out of her arms and into some other woman’s, but that was the way it was. She didn’t have a choice; she was caught between the tiger’s claws.
Keira Knightley was an eighteen year old high school graduate. She grew up in a run down, single wide trailer along the highway. Her mother was a high school drop out, never passing eleventh grade and her step dad was a respectable man by day and a terror by night.
Sharman Knightley married Riley O’Connor just after 3 months of dating. They met in a local tavern and Sharman had fallen prey to his debonair charm. Keira, only thirteen at the time was ecstatic to finally have a father. Her biological father ran out on her and her momma when she was only three. Sharman told Keira it was because of her that her husband left her.
Riley never showed his abusive side until after the wedding. Sharman came and picked up young Keira from her sister, Jane just after the honeymoon had commenced. Jane gawked at the awful bruises that lined her cheek and demanded to be told who had hurt her baby sister. Sharman laughed it off and told her not to worry about it. Jane grudgingly dropped the subject. Keira wasn’t stupid, she knew what or in this case
who had hurt her mother. And she was scared out of her mind. Surprisingly however, Riley never laid a hand on her. He only went after her mother, Sharman.
Keira grew up as the years went by; her grades in school were always high. She made sure of that, terrified that if she made below a B, Riley would come after her. At the end of her senior year, at graduation, Keira Christina Knightley graduated in the top twenty percent of her class and got accepted into UT, University of Texas. She planned on majoring in psychology and minoring in business. All those years of living in a house with a manic depressive mother who allowed her husband to beat her and an abusive, good for nothing step-father, taught her how to observe and listen. Her skills improved as things got worse at home. She wanted to help those who were or are being beaten by their fathers, boyfriends or husbands.
Moving out of the old trailer park was a big step for Keira; she moved to Austin from her little hometown of Navasota and bought a tiny apartment. Needing quick money, Keira had applied for a job at the Eagar Beaver. She was a relatively good dancer and was blessed with her mother’s ample bosom, and with the hardships at home, Keira was in great shape.
One night, while walking to her dinky car, Keira was mugged and dragged off to the side of the Eagar Beaver to be robbed, beaten, and rapped. Keira was left for dead, but the next day, a homeless man had found her while digging in the garbage for breakfast and took her to the hospital. The Doctors informed her when she woke up that all was alright.
But all wasn’t right. That night when she was yanked off, dragged into that dark ally way, a cold slimy hand covering her mouth so that her screams were drowned out, and was raped, having her virginity stolen, a baby was conceived.
Keira Knightley was forced to quit her job at the strip club and find work for a lower pay. Giving up her dreams of going to college, she felt hopeless. Refusing to return home, certain that if Riley found out, he would beat her till she miscarried, Keira made ends meet by working full time at a local diner.
When she was four months pregnant, her anxiety of being a mother overcame her and she visited a doctor’s office to discuss abortion options. The doctor went step by step, explaining the process of abortion and the many different ways to get rid of a fetus. The doctor showed pictures and told her what they did with the poor things. Keira thanked the doctor and scratched abortion off her list of things to do. There was no way she could go through with it. So her next choice was adoption.
In her 6th month, Keira had an appointment with one of American Adoption’s bases there in Austin. She met with an agent, and she felt her baby kick. Something that he- she found out in her fourth month after the abortion fiasco- had been doing a lot lately. A small smile touched her lips as the woman went on, and she felt that she was doing the right thing. Keira was an eighteen year old girl, fresh out of school with no money to support this child. She knew that there was a family out there waiting for her child, she just knew it.
In Keira’s night month of pregnancy, a few weeks before the due date, she had to take leave from the diner. They offered her a two month maternity leave, but she refused saying she needed the tips. Earlier in the month, the adoption agent called saying she found a family who were excitedly awaiting the new baby, and agreed to have him named Nicholas. Now all that was left to do was wait.
On May 15, 2005, Nicholas Scott was born. They left the last name blank. That was for the other family to fill in. When the nurse came in to take the child away from her, Keira felt an urgency erupt. She wanted her baby. She wanted to be selfish and keep her child. But that wasn’t an option.
The next day Keira was released from the hospital, she resumed her life as if her baby never existed. She went threw the motions at work, taking orders from truckers and business men. Buckling under the stress of the big city life, Keira went home.
As she pulled up in the dirt driveway, Keira reminisced about the old days when she would climb the trees hiding from Riley. She hoped he was pasted out sleeping. When she knocked on the door, Sharman answered it and her jaw dropped. Her baby was home.
“Keira, where on earth have you been? Why haven’t you called?” Sharman pulled her daughter into a tight hug and invited her inside.
“Where’s Riley?” Keira asked as she searched the house looking for the drunken lard.
“He’s gone Keira. I kicked him out. I couldn’t handle that life style anymore, and after 3 months had gone by with out a word from you, I realized that he must have been the reason. I got help Keira. I’m going to counseling now. I would never have gone either if you hadn’t told me that you were going to major in it. So speaking of majors how is college?”
Keira proceeded into pouring our details of the last 10 months of her life.
The months passed, and not a day went by that Keira didn’t think of Nicholas, but the pain was dulling. She now went to UT, visiting and calling her mother often. She was also now dating. He was a wonderful guy; he made her laugh and smile and the most important thing, he didn’t judge her because of her past actions. Orlando Bloom was the perfect guy, and she couldn’t be happier. She was content with her life. As the saying goes, alls well that ends well. Keira had some how taken that tiger’s claw that held her down and lifted it off of her, allowing her to be free.
