Bear Hug

Viggo smiled as he closed his eyes and gazed up toward the sun, a red glow seeping through his eyelids. He felt the sun go behind a cloud and opened his eyes. Everything was so tranquil. Peter had given the entire cast and crew a week off but too his surprise not one of them had gone home, all choosing to spend their time in New Zealand. Viggo blinked as green dots blurred his vision from looking at the sun. He could here birds chirping away and the distant murmur of someone cutting their lawn. He could also hear laughter and smiled as he turned to see four hobbits and an elf sitting in a circle giggling and rolling around in the lush green grass about 800 meters away.
“May I join you?” Came the familiar British voice of Sir Ian from behind him.
“Please, by all means,” he replied.
“Oh to be that age again,” remarked Ian, following Viggo’s gaze to the group that were now engaged in a vibrant grass fight. Viggo turned to face Ian and smiled, letting out a grunt of amusement. He turned his back to the group looking out on the vast expanse that was Peter’s garden. There was no sense of boundary or confinement. Peter’s house was the only building for miles and his garden went on as far as the eye could see down towards a river. To the left was a small copse and to his right was nothing but countryside with the occasional farmer’s field many miles away. Ian let out a contented sigh.
“This place is just heavenly,” he sighed, voicing Viggo’s exact thoughts.
The serenity was broken by the padding of footsteps from someone running up behind. Viggo turned just in time to see Orlando fling himself at him in a huge bear hug with such force that he fell backwards and they both ended up sprawled on the ground.
Orlando grinned from on top of Viggo, his big brown eyes, that resembled very much those of a puppy Viggo reflected, penetrating his own. He gave Viggo a quick peck on the cheek and with that jumped up and ran off has fast as he had arrived to rejoin the others, leaving poor Viggo lying on his back with a very dazed expression on his face.
Ian laughed to himself as he offered Viggo a hand to get up. “Kids these days, hey?” He chuckled. “No respect for their elders.”
Viggo took the outstretched hand and pulled himself up, rubbing the cheek that Orlando had kissed with his free hand. He let out a constrained laugh. “Yeah, Kids eh?”<br>
Viggo and Ian stood together in a comfortable silence admiring the view and absorbing the surrounding beauty. It wasn’t long before the same padding footsteps could be heard coming up behind them again but this time Viggo was prepared and turned around with plenty of time to ready a stance for an impending bear hug. The hug came with ferocity equal to the first and made Viggo stagger back but he regained his balance and did not fall. The big brown eyes of Orlando again grinned at him but this time the peck was planted on his lips rather than his cheek. As he turned to run off back to the others Viggo grabbed his wrist causing him to yelp, more in shock than pain. Viggo twisted it, forcing him to turn back to face him with such haste that their chests crashed together.
Viggo grinned, humoured by the expression of innocence and confusion plastered all over Orlando’s face.
“Now. Elf boy,” he began, trying not to laugh. “If you’re playing one of those adolescent spin the bottle games then do you really think that counts as a proper kiss?” Orlando giggled uncomfortably but didn’t reply.
“Well?” Viggo pushed.
“I... It’s just... It was… Billy said…” before Orlando could stammer out any more pathetic attempts at an excuse Viggo silenced him with his lips. Orlando’s eyes opened wide in shock but quickly closed in a return of the act. Viggo broke away and chuckled.
“Now… run along and play and don’t be bothering us again,” he said, in the most patronizing voice he could manage with out bursting out in laughter. He watched Orlando run off back to the others, every few paces glancing back over his shoulder and turned back to face Ian a big grin spread across his face.
“If that doesn’t stop him, I don’t know what will,” Viggo grinned.
“Stop him!” exclaimed Ian. “My dear friend if that is how you punish the bear hug, you’ll have the whole lot after you,” he chuckled. “Punishment indeed!”
