Keira Knightley was quietly sitting on the windowsill in her bedroom. It was December 24, Christmas Eve. She was spending the holidays at her parent’s house, but it was oddly quiet and still downstairs. That was weird because her parents were always looking for an excuse to celebrate.
This seems like a pretty big excuse to me! Keira thought to herself as she sighed.
Keira didn't care about parties. All she honestly wanted to do was spend Christmas with Orlando. He promised that he would be there to celebrate, but called earlier that day and said his flight had been canceled. It had crushed Keira. She hadn't seen him since their last Pirates interview, five months ago.
"Just another Merry Christmas" she muttered to herself, dragging her body over to the dresser, which held her cell phone. She flipped it open; no new messages. Letting out a frustrated groan, Keira threw it onto her bed. But the throw was to hard, and it hit the wall and part of the back chipped off.
"Dammit!" she whispered, going over to pick it up. "What did i do to deserve this? All i want is to see Orlando!"
She sat down in her queen-size bed, slumping. A blanket of fresh, powdery, white snow had now covered the yard. It was a gorgeous night.
DING DONG!
The obnoxious ring grabbed Keira's attention, pulling her out of her thoughts.
Who could it be?
She got up and left her room to answer the door. But her mom beat her to it. As Keira started down the long stairs, Sharmon called out her name.
"Keira!"
"Yes?" she stopped at the top of the staircase, waiting for her mum to tell her what she wanted.
"It's for you!" Sharmon told her. You could tell that she was smiling; her voice gave it all away.
"Me?"
"Yes you, know hurry up!"
Keira quickened her pace.
Who could possibly want to see me tonight? she thought, arriving at the bottom.
She looked up and rested her eyes on the sight before her. A tall man with an unmistakable head of curly brown hair was before her. His head was turned to the side, for he was engaged in a conversation with Keira's mum.
"Orlando?" she asked, wondering aloud.
The mysterious figure turned. A huge grin formed onto his face. "Keira!" he smiled brightly.
Upon hearing the sound of his voice and seeing his face, Keira rushed over to him. It had been way to long. The two hugged each other tightly, never wanting to let go. Moments passed before Sharmon "coughed" and the embrace ended. After a few seconds of awkward silence, Orlando regrouped and spoke up.
"So Keira, are you busy? Because i want to take you somewhere."
"Uh, no. Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
"A surprise?" Keira asked, giving him a quizzical look.
"Ya" Orlando grabbed her hand and lead her to the doorway. "Let's go!"
"Wait!" Sharmon instructed strictly. "Did I say you could go?"
"Mum! I'm 21, i don't need your approval!" Keira stated firmly.
"Honey, i don't care if your 54, you can't go if i say no!"
Keira leaned back against the wall and let out a long sigh. "I feel like i'm 16 again. " she said, waiting for an answer.
"Ya, and you still act like it to!" Orlando added playfully.
"Oh shut-up!" Keira said, giving him a flirty little push.
A minute or two passed before Keira's mum decided on an answer. "Yes, you can g-"
"Thank you!" Orlando cut off Mrs. Knightley before she could even finish the sentence. He pulled Keira out the door, their hands still tightly laced together.
When the two were outside in the yard that had just been covered with snow, Orlando complimented Keira.
"You look amazing" she said breathlessly, admiring her outfit. Keira had paired dark skinny jeans with knee-high, white boots complete with a small fur trim. She topped it off with a soft, knit, cream-colored sweater. It was effortless.
"Thanks" she smiled. Keira still hadn't gotten over the fact that Orlando was actually there.
"Oh, and you need to wear this." he told her as he pulled out a blindfold from his pocket.
"Why?"
"You'll see." Orlando responded, trying to make her more curious about the surprise.
He blindfolded Keira and took her hand, leading the way to an amazing Christmas.
* * *
They had just arrived at Orlando's surprise. Keira was still blindfolded and clueless, which is exactly what he wanted. Both of them got out of the car and walked over to where they needed to be. He undid the blindfold and let Keira's eyes fall on the sight before her.
"You, Orlando, are too sweet!" Keira said, referring to the two thoroughbreds, white mares that were harnessed to a gold and red sleigh.
"Ya, well, I just wanted to spend time with you" Orlando blushed slightly. “And I thought this would be special.”
“It is. Thank-you!” Keira said as they both sat down in the sleigh.
“You should feel lucky. I never did this, not even for Kate.”
“Oh, not even for Kate? You must like me a whole lot then.” She said in a playful, flirty way.
“More than you know” Orlando whispered under his breath so Keira wouldn’t hear him.
The sleigh ride began and both Keira and Orlando sat in silence, just enjoying each other’s company. But the something clicked inside Keira’s mind.
“I thought your flight was cancelled! How did you get here?” she wondered.
“Sea turtles!” he laughed jokingly.
“Oh no, don’t go all Pirates on me! How did you really get here?
“Fine,” Orlando smiled. “I arrived in London yesterday, called you today and said I couldn’t make it so you would be all sad. Then I unexpectedly showed up tonight and wanted you to be very surprised and excited.”
“I’m always excited to see you Or.” Keira responded. “But it worked, I’ll give you that.”
“Good” he said, still smiling.
Tiny, white snowflakes started to fall all around them. It completed the beautiful, picturesque moment. Everything was prefect.
“Ooh, this is so romantic” Keira looked up at Orlando, grabbing his arm.
“Ya. Speaking of romantic, this is for you.” Orlando pulled a smallish box out of his coat pocket and handed it to her.
“For me?” she asked, taking the box. Her face was full of surprise.
“Uh-huh.”
Keira reached for the card and read it over. It said:
Keira,
You remind me of diamonds, yes it’s true
they sparkle and shine and are gorgeous just like you. Merry Christmas!
Love you,
Orlando
"I know it's corny, but all of it's true" he said, blushing again.
Keira reached for the silver box, wondering what on earth could be inside. When she saw, her eyes biggened.
"Merry Christmas!" Orlando smiled, looking at her.
"Orlando!" she gasped, admiring her present. he had given her a pair of diamond studs with a matching necklace. They sparkled like crazy in the moonlight. "I-I-, How-, Wha-, Thank-you!” she said, finally finding the right words.
"Your welcome"
Keira placed her empty hand on his shoulder and kissed him. He received a passionate and emotion filled kiss that was better than anything Keira could give him. But after a few moments, it was over and they slowly pulled away.
"So Keira, what did you get me?" he asked, his eyes challenging her.
"Sorry Bloom, but that was your present." Keira responded, not missing a beat.
He kissed her again, for it concluded their moonlight sleigh ride. It was a very Merry Christmas!
