He shivered in the cold winter air. December 24th, Christmas Eve, and he, Orlando Bloom was about to do something drastic.
Before he could chicken out, he made himself walk up the snowy steps. Holding his breath, he rang the doorbell.
To his relief, it was not Keira who answered, but her mother.
"Oh, Orlando!" she squealed. "It's so good to see you again! Let me go get Keira--"
"Umm, please don't," Orlando said quickly. "Can you... can you give this to her for me?"
Shar took the envelope that he was holding. "Yes, yes, of course," she said hastily. "Are you absolutely sure you don't want to come in?"
Orlando smiled. "Yeah, I'm sure. I've got to... er... be somewhere anyway. Thanks a lot, Shar." He turned and headed down the sidewalk.
"Merry Christmas!" she hollered after him. She then turned to the task at hand.
Upon re-entering the house, she saw her husband, who was sitting on the couch and drinking his fourth mug of eggnog. Normally she would object, but tonight it was allowed. Rupert was over, talking nonstop, voicing his opinions as though they were fact. Her son, Caleb, sat nearby, looking as though he wanted nothing more than to punch his little sister's boyfriend in the face.
Keira sat, alone, in the windowsill on the far side of the room, watching the snow fall. She stared at the white flakes, a frown on her lovely face.
"Who was at the door, Mum?" she asked, snapping out of her trance-like state. In answer, Shar held out the envelope. Keira crinkled her brow in confusion.
"Open it," her mother whispered.
Keira didn't hesitate but opened the letter with renewed interest. She then began to read.
We met nearly six years ago
In a city called L.A.
I never dreamed you'd be so different
I never dreamed you'd blow me away
We quickly grew close
I admit I was under your spell
You were my best friend
You knew me so well
But suddenly I panicked
Is that all we were destined to be?
Best friends til the end of time
Would it ever be you and me?
So, Keira, now it's Christmas
And at Christmas you don't lie
I should've told you years ago
But I guess I was too shy
You, to me, are perfect
I love everything that you do
I've known it for a while
I'm madly in love with you
Merry Christmas
-Orlando
She couldn't believe it. Him in love with her? She read the letter again. She hadn't misread it.
"When did you get this?" Keira asked her mother faintly.
"Not three minutes ago," Shar replied. Then, as if reading her daughter's mind, she added, "You can probably still catch him."
Keira nodded, and without any further thought, she walked out the door.
Suddenly she felt a vice-like grip on her arm.
"You're not going anywhere," Rupert whispered, letting her arm out of his pincer grip.
Keira rolled her eyes. She didn't want to deal with this right now. "Watch me," she replied, turning and walking down the steps, leaving a baffled Rupert shivering in the doorway.
She spotted his silhouette. Orlando was half a block away. It was now or never.
"ORLANDO, WAIT!" she called as she began to run down the sidewalk, vaguely aware she had only socks on her feet, and that the snow was cold.
He stopped and turned, not believing what he saw. Keira was speeding towards him, looking rather desperate.
She stopped in front of him, gasping heavily, struggling to catch her breath.
"Look," he started, but she cut him off.
"About the letter..." He held up his hand, signaling her to stop.
"You've got to know that I didn't write it to upset you," he said. "I didn't do it to try and convince you that I'm the guy you should be with. I know you can make up your own mind. I did it because I can't lie anymore, Keira. I just want you to be happy. Even if that means I'm not."
Her eyes filled with tears as she said, "I know. But I'm the happiest with you."
His eyes widened in surprise. "You are?"
She nodded. "The last few months, I've realized that it was you all along. You are the man of not only many teenage girl's dreams, but also mine, and I... I love you."
"And that makes Rupert... what?"
Keira laughed and put her arms around Orlando. "The man of my reality, I guess. So, my love, are you going to kiss me, or what?"
He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. After several seconds, they broke apart.
He looked down at her feet. "You do realize you're wearing socks without shoes?"
She giggled. "How could I let the man I love get away by taking the time to put shoes on?"
